USMNT vs. Australia, 2-1

The United States booked its place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle. While the scoreline looked comfortable, the match itself was far more intense, featuring hard tackles, heated exchanges, and controversial moments.

The US, despite not having their star player, Christian Pulisic due to a calf injury, used Ricardo Pepi as the lead with Folarin Balogun up front.

At the 11th minute, the opening goal came the same gameplay as their opening match. Balogun’s movement forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into an unfortunate own goal, giving the United States an early 1-0 lead.

At the 43rd minute, 21-year-old Alex Freeman doubled the lead after Sergiño Dest’s (from Australia) effort created a rebound opportunity. The goal required a VAR check before being confirmed, providing one of the most discussed moments of the match. Freeman’s first World Cup goal gave USMNT some valuable breathing room heading into the second half.

Now at the second half, it becomes a little more challenging. Several Australian tackles brought a physical edge to the contest, and frustrations began to boil over as the match wore on. The referee had to calm players on multiple occasions. A late confrontation between both teams resulted in several yellow cards as well.

Many viewers questioned whether some challenges actually deserved stronger punishment, especially as tempers rose during the final stages.

One unusual moment saw referee Felix Zwayer suffering leg cramps, leading to Balogun helping him stretch before play resumed.

Key Substitutions:

Australia

  • Nestory Irankunda entered in the second half.
  • Connor Metcalfe was introduced to provide attacking energy.
  • Debutant Christian Volpato also came on and showed flashes of promise.

United States

  • Pochettino’s biggest change came before kickoff, with Ricardo Pepi replacing the injured Christian Pulisic. Pepi rewarded that faith with an energetic performance and helped create the pressure that led to the opening goal.

This victory sends the United States into the knockout round and puts them in position to finish atop Group D. It also marks the first time since 1930 that the U.S. men’s team has won its opening two matches at a World Cup.

Australia, meanwhile, will need a positive result in its final group match against Paraguay to guarantee advancement.
