The origin behind my new art print “The Crown” is that a woman’s black crown should be celebrated. It serves as a part of an embraced identity or a badge of honor. For me, my crown happens to be thin, yet curly and coily hair with a delicate maintenance. For you, it may be something different. Whether it sits on top of a black woman head or man’s head, it should represent power and respect. A true crown has no template or basic standards. Don’t let anyone take away your crown.
As a whole, this art piece is a fusion of portraiture, abstraction, and floral composition that creates a visually symbolic piece. At the heart of my piece, I wanted to not only represent the silhouette of the black woman and the crown, but evoke a sense of introspection and strength that represents an internal dialogue about our identity, self-worth, and transformation. I wanted to merge a sense of elegance with raw emotion with intricate layering, mixed textures, and striking contrasts.
The contrast between the flowers and gold accents show the softness and signifies renewal, hope, and continuous growth of our crown as people of color. The silhouette and defined edges create the complexity of emotions of who we are.
As an artist, I wanted to try something a little different and use all my knowledge about being a black woman and the fundaments to make an art piece worthy of being recognized, observed, and even collected.
