Why Do I Always Have To Be Strong

Who you are, internally and externally, is beautiful and worthy of respect and kindness. My identity and experiences deserves room to be vulnerable.

There are so many cultural, societal, and generational beliefs that’s tell people to be strong all the time, especially when it comes to mental health. Sometimes, it makes me feel not worthy of the time, energy, and attention.

I don’t need to be strong though. I just need someone to understand even after prayer. I should be allowed to cry without being told to be strong all the time.

I feel the weight of it all. I’m smiling through pain, pushing through adversity, and enduring without support. What I crave is a helping hand.

When I reach out, the responses are predictable: “You’ll get through it,” or the classic, “You’re strong—you’ll be fine.” But what does that even really mean? I am exhausted from smiling through adversity because it’s assumed I’m inherently resilient.
