Let’s break it down: What is Black dandyism, and why did it take center stage at this year’s Met Gala? And more importantly, how did Megan Thee Stallion absolutely own it with that Josephine Baker-inspired look? Obviously there are other looks I love but Megan Thee Stallions look really stood out to me.
So, what is Black dandyism?
Black dandyism is all about flipping the script. It’s when Black people take what’s traditionally been seen as “European high fashion”—think tailored suits, crisp collars, refined elegance—and remix it with our own flavor, history, and cultural power. It’s not just about looking good (even though the looks serve). It’s about reclaiming style, showing dignity, and challenging the boxes society has tried to put us in.
This movement goes way back—through the Harlem Renaissance, jazz, civil rights, and beyond. It’s timeless, intentional, and undeniably Black.
Now, how does this connect to the Met Gala 2025?
This year’s Met Gala theme was all about “The Garden of Time,” but it leaned heavily into celebrating Black style and legacy—particularly through the lens of Black dandyism. So you saw a lot of clean tailoring, vintage glamour, and historical nods, especially to iconic Black figures who’ve shaped fashion in powerful ways.
Megan Thee Stallion = A Whole Moment
Megan came through dripping in a custom silver Michael Kors gown, but it wasn’t just glam for glam’s sake. Her look was inspired by Josephine Baker—an icon who embodied elegance, performance, and radical freedom. That slick sculptural ponytail? Straight out of Josephine’s The French Way era. Megan wasn’t just wearing a dress. She was telling a story.
Why this matters?
