So today is Martin Luther King Jr day but unfortunately the Inauguration Day of Donald Trump. That’s weird saying that in one sentence but what’s done is done.
Let’s talk about how Saturday evening Tik-Tok, CapCut and apps own by ByteDance went offline. In my case, around 7:09 PM PST. When this happened, the United States went crazy. Then about 12-14 hours later, TikTok is back up for some users but CapCut is down. However, TikTok is not in the clear yet. Majority of users flocked to the Chinese app Xiaohongshu (REDnote).
Earlier that day or Friday, Instagram updated their grid from the perfect square format to the 4:3 ratio with ability to post 9:16 ratio. This hasn’t really affected my post too much only a few I did this year but for a lot of people it created a weird look in their perfectly curated feed. My problem is not the grid but the alignment of the top of profile. It looks cluttered and out of place.
The last thing is that Instagram head Adam Mosseri just announced a new editing app called Edits
Mosseri said in a video posted to Instagram. He goes on to describe the app:
Edits is more than a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools. There will be a dedicated tab for inspiration, another for keeping track of early ideas, a much higher-quality camera (which I used to record this video), all the editing tools you’d expect, the ability to share drafts with friends and other creators, and — if you decide to share your videos on Instagram — powerful insights into how those videos perform.
Was this all a plan all together? In part yes. It gets people talking about Trump and his presidency. However, Meta planned this from the start when they first heard about the TikTok ban. Yes, I’m interested to see how it goes. However, it’s almost unoriginal at this point. It has a dashboard like Tik-Tok and features and interface like CapCut.
Nothing seems to be original anymore. People are willing to invest in copies instead new and innovative ideas. This is what saddens me.
